What do trailers brakes have?

Some owners only use the trailer of their semi-rigid very sporadically and others of frequent way, but in all the cases it is necessary to realize a periodic maintenance, so much to lengthen its life as to maintain the security. Nowadays, when looking for a trailer, we can find a very wide offer adapted to almost all the needs and, luckily for the user, manufactured with very high levels of quality. However, analyzing the market with some objectivity can be found three large groups: housing, cargo trailer, and the novel support without wheel anchored directly to the hitch of the car. But what do trailers brakes have?

The world is consistently facilitated by the technology behind the most innovative and reliable trailer brake control systems available. There is a wide range of controllers and harnesses available, along with a solid selection of magnets, springs and backplate assemblies, at the forefront of safety, durability and total performance. It is best to make sure that the vehicle is equipped with the system suited to the specific towing needs.

The use of trailers is often quite common, either for work purposes or merely playful purposes, but this can be dangerous either when maneuvering at high speeds or also when braking.

The trailer brakes

If your trailer is equipped with brakes, these must always be in perfect condition, for which we will review its components:

  1. The cables and their covers, the cam, the shoes and the springs are more sensitive to oxidation than the bearings, so any immersion in water, especially salty, can cause a rapid blocking of the system.

If when the season is over we keep our trailer in the garage without rinsing it or doing serious maintenance, it will cause that when we need it again, we find a complete block of the wheels or a total absence of braking. Some models of the trailer have a system of direct connection to a hose of fresh water to the brake drum so that it can be rinsed and allowed to dry, even allowing it to be sprayed with some type of anti-oxidant spray.

  1. The damper of the brake control, which joins the central bar with the head, must operate smoothly and without hitting, but with the corresponding hardness.
  2. The rod that connects the head with the brake drums has to make the proper route to each model of trailer. Too large a stroke will cause a premature destruction of the shock absorber.

The Trailer Sway Control also communicates with trailer brakes along with an electrical connection but it goes one step forward to the management of the car computer controls the trailer brake as well, acceleration and also works with the traction system. Vehicles that have this function have software that monitors the vehicle and trailer to avoid any loss of grip or lateral movements of the trailer.

Operation as such determines whether the trailer is tilted when bending, thereby adjusting the engine to slow down and braking the corresponding tires of the vehicle being towed in order to correct the movement of the trailer. On the other hand, the braking and suspension components of the car you are dragging are less worn as the braking is distributed between the unit and trailer, thus avoiding excessive stress to the components.
